Arboles UK, the Snow-Camp charity & youth knife crime

This isn’t one of our typical posts where we talk about the laboratory or safety shower industry. Instead this is raising awareness to a problem AND a potential solution to a problem that affects all areas of the country.

Knife crime and mindfulness aren’t really two things you’d expect to see in the same sentence. For the staff of Snow Camp Charity National Youth Charity this underpins their latest drive to combat youth knife crime. Snow Camp provide a support network for vulnerable youths and aim to engage participants via the world of snow sports. Those that know us, know we Arboles UK are a company that are passionate about the great outdoors, we have skiers, a ski instructor, climbers, a mountain biker, a horse rider and runners so we know first hand the benefits that focus and the outdoors can bring.

The straightforward priciples of Stop. Breathe. Think. when practiced can bring one into a state of being in the present and change what could potentially be a rash and life altering decision. The practice of this type of mindfulness helps turn a reactive mindset into a more considered and positive mindset and with this bring about change and a better management of feelings.

Snow Camp have enlisted the help of drill artist Nito NB who hails from West London to create a track called ‘Breathe’. Through his track, Nito hopes to raise awareness of the importance of being aware of and managing your emotions. Although drill music has been accused of encouraging knife crime, the charity wants to use a relatable and authentic method to reach as many young people as possible.

Over recent months, whilst delivering its own mental health programme with young people, Snow-Camp has seen that mental wellbeing is something that increasingly impacting young people, exacerbated by the COVID situation. Young people rarely have the means or resources to find the support they need. Ninety-two percent of young people on Snow-Camp’s programme believe that the rise in knife crime is linked to young people’s mental health issues and challenges related to controlling emotions. That’s why the campaign is also offering young people across the UK the opportunity to sign up for the charity’s free series of mindfulness tutorials and free 1-1-counselling sessions.

Snow Camp do great work and their results are far reaching in the community. With heavyweight ambassadors from the British snowsports industry such as:
